Table-Scape: Redefining the Outdoor Table as a Social Landscape

A Table For everyone, By Everyone

Public spaces are increasingly becoming hybrid zones—blending work with leisure, solitude with social exchange. Public spaces are canvases where cultures converge and conversations spark. At Moori Interiors, we sought to challenge the notion of traditional outdoor furniture through Table-Scape, a modular installation that reimagines the humble table as a dynamic, interactive system for connection, collaboration, and creativity.

Rooted in the idea of urban landscapes as fertile grounds for cultural exchange, Table-Scape blurs the line between function and expression. This modular system—crafted using disc-shaped Polygood sheets anchored by mild steel rods—transforms into a fluid terrain where community, culture, and design intersect. The piece invites individuals to not just sit, but to participate, reshape, and reimagine their environment.

The modularity of the design allows each disc to function as both a component and a catalyst, enabling users to configure spaces that respond to their needs. Whether it’s a solitary moment of reflection or an animated group discussion, the installation adapts to the mood, the moment, and the meaning each person brings. Each table becomes a statement—a piece that transforms, that invites connection, and that belongs to everyone.

Historically, tables have witnessed human stories unfold—where families gathered, decisions were made, and ideas exchanged. Table-Scape pays homage to this legacy while pushing it forward, transforming the table into a democratic space where diverse voices merge into shared narratives.

Design as a Social Catalyst

The design philosophy behind Table-Scape is rooted in inclusivity and adaptability. Each modular disc invites interaction—from intimate pairings to public gatherings, from formal discussions to casual hangouts. This multiplicity reflects the many roles a table has historically played in society—as a place for nourishment, negotiation, storytelling, and communion.

It is furniture for everyone.

By offering users the freedom to modify and arrange the table’s configuration, Table-Scape becomes a canvas for communal creativity—an expression of the ever-shifting social topography of the urban realm.

The dynamic visual character of Table-Scape lies in its integration of curved discs and slender rods—elements that together craft a structure that feels both fluid and grounded. Varying in size and contour, the discs form a continuous, topographic surface evocative of organic landscapes. These sculptural forms are supported by thin metal rods that bring strength and definition, all while maintaining a porous, minimalist visual quality.

This pairing of organic surfaces with minimal structural lines gives rise to a distinct visual language—one that merges form and function seamlessly. The result is not just an aesthetic gesture, but an interactive spatial composition that invites engagement and adapts fluidly to the people around it. Much like the city itself, it reflects a living complexity, shifting with the rhythms of use and human connection.

Visual Language : Fluidity in Form and Frame

Table-Scape is constructed from 12mm-thick Polygood plastic sheets, a sustainable material made from recycled appliances, single-use plastics, and industrial waste. Each sheet tells a story through its vibrant coloration and unique patterning, shaped into four distinct disc forms designed for visual and functional versatility.

The structural system employs 16mm diameter mild steel rods in three variable lengths, each with threaded ends for seamless assembly. A threaded connector is integrated into the underside of each disc, allowing these rods to attach securely, creating a modular yet stable framework.

This thoughtful combination of resilient recycled plastic and minimal steel detailing ensures the piece is not only weather-resistant and durable for outdoor use, but also elegantly engineered for repeated assembly, disassembly, and reconfiguration.

Each table, therefore, is not only a medium of interaction but also a statement of sustainable design practice—one that highlights circularity without compromising aesthetics or function.

Cultural Meaning in Modular Design

At its core, Table-Scape is about accommodating diversity. Its modular nature allows it to adapt to different cultural practices and social rituals—serving as a table for a traditional feast one moment, and a collaborative co-working zone the next. It is this flexibility that makes it not just a product, but a platform where tradition and modernity coexist.

Key Aspects of Table-Scape

Interaction: Fosters shared experiences and encourages spontaneous connection in public environments.

Creative Expression: Empowers users to engage with the design through reconfiguration, making every setup unique.

Multifunctionality: Transcends single-purpose design to serve as dining space, work hub, social gathering zone, or contemplative retreat.

Table-Scape is a response to the rhythms of contemporary urban life—modular, mobile, inclusive, and ever-changing. It is design as infrastructure, as artwork, and as invitation—inviting everyone to take a seat, shift the form, and start a dialogue.
